Safe Use of Power-Operated Hand Tools (SUPHT)

For whom:

The Safe Use of Power-Operated Hand Tools (SUPHT) course is designed for workers, technicians, and operators who use power-operated hand tools such as drilling machines, angle grinders, cutting machines (e.g., jigsaw, circular saw, reciprocating saw), and rotary tools in their daily tasks.

It is especially suited for personnel working in construction, marine, manufacturing, maintenance, and related sectors who require hands-on training to safely and effectively operate such equipment.

Entry Requirement:

• Physically fit and able to handle power tools safely.
• Basic literacy and numeracy skills preferred.
• No prior experience required, but familiarity with basic hand tools is an advantage.

Course Overview:

This course focuses on practical, hands-on training with power-operated hand tools, supported by essential safety theory. It aims to develop the participants’ competence in the safe use, inspection, and maintenance of common power-operated tools, enhancing hazard awareness and workplace safety.

Course Content

• Theory:
  • Overview of power-operated hand tools, Legal requriements
  • Common hazards and risk control measures
  • Safe operating procedures for different tools
  • Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
  • Emergency response procedures
• Practical:
  • Tool inspection and maintenance
  • Safe operation of hand drilling machines
  • Safe use of angle grinders
  • Operation of cutting tools: jigsaw, circular saw, reciprocating saw
  • Use of impact driver and rotary hammer
  • Practical performance under Trainer observation

Course Duration: 

• 8 Hours
  • Theory: 3 Hours (including 30 minutes for written assessment)
  • Practical Training : 3 Hours
  • Practical Performance : 2 Hours

  • Written Assessment:
    15 MCQs – Closed-book – 30 minutes
    Passing Criteria: 60%
  • Practical Performance:
    Participants must demonstrate competency in the safe use and handling of various power-operated tools.
    Trainer will closely obsere and assess based on tool handling, inspection, operation, and adherence to safety protocols.
  • Passing Criteria: 100% competency in practical performance tasks.
